Most books are provided by your residency. Don’t buy anything YET! Wait until after orientation to buy.
I used many books throughout residency. The first two on this list were always in my pocket as an intern. The third I didn’t get until becoming an attending and I wish I’d had it in residency, because it’s a great reference. – Pixie
- Tarascon’s Hospital Medicine Pocketbook (FYI our residency provided this for our interns.)
- The Sanford Antimicrobial Guide (can get in print or as an app)
- Netter’s Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy (for the DOs and those who want to be great at MSK exam in outpatient and ortho/sports med clinic)
- As an intern I also loved OnlineMedEd’s intern guide book. The common meds section alone was worth having it nearby.
- For OB – this is the best pocket book, by Zheng. I no longer do OB, but this book was MUCH USED during residency.
PS: Everyone should have a folding clipboard. There’s never a surface available to write on that isn’t contaminated. I liked the “pharmacy edition” because the stuff on the back of it is more useful. (Also it comes in neon pink)
